If you are an EI advocate, ROI is something that you should feel comfortable discussing. You should have access to relevant research and if possible your own stories in which you demonstrate how emotional intelligence facilitates such things as…….

• Higher sales and profits

• Increased performance/communication

• Improved customer satisfaction

• Enhanced Trust

• Reduction in training costs

When you are discussing EI it is also important not to suggest it is more important or replaces IQ. It is more useful to highlight how it enables people to reap the benefits of their IQ and assist them in getting on better in the world. Try illustrating how enhancing your EI allows you to be yourself on a good day but more often. Essentially EI is common sense…… that is unfortunately not all that common.

The latest measurement of ‘commonsense’ the EQ-i 2.0 (an accumulation of over 30 years of research by clinical psychologists) greatly assists in the simplification of the process as it is an extremely intuitive framework and users have the added security of knowing that it is supported by the solid science that lies behind the inventory.

Everything should be made simple but no simpler.

- Albert Einstein

The feedback we have received to date is that the BarOn EQ-i (the original ‘common sense’ measurement) was extremely useful however the EQ-i 2.0 is a quantum leap in progress and innovation for the field of EI. The EQ-i 2.0 is far easier to use and contains a compelling developmental focus which serves to greatly enhance face validity. It is also easier to illustrate the return on investment as there was a vast amount of research conducted by the test publisher MHS.

Let us know if you would like a PDF document outlining the EQ-i 2.0 Return of Investment!

While the EQ-i2.0 identifies the level of a client’s emotional and social functioning based on his or her responses, the EQ 360 assessment provides a more in-depth analysis by having those who work with the client provide information as well. When observer ratings are compared with the results of an EQ-i2.0 self-report, a more complete 360 degree profile emerges.

The EQ 360 identifies an individual’s key strengths that can be leveraged to the benefit of the organization, as well as impediments to high performance that could be improved. As with the EQ-i2.0, the new EQ 360 features significant changes based on data and feedback gathered over several years.

It is the start of the New Year and to kick it off using some ‘Solution Focus Psychology’ for you and your team do the following:

Start by looking at how far you have come rather than solely how far you have to go. Then communicate your findings widely. Too often we start something new without adequately looking at the progress already made and so we don’t benefit from the motivational and psychological nourishment it can make.

Secondly map out the goals necessary to reach your ‘Future Perfect’ (aka ‘End in Mind’). Use both aspirational goals and more short term ‘small wins’. Make sure to connect these goals to the overall mission and values of your organisation. This will propel everyone with the power of purpose. And remember the “why behind the what” creates an emotional link to the critical job to be done.

Lastly, create a climate of ‘attention to contributions’ where everyone shares the ‘Authentic Contribution’ they plan to make towards their goals and supports each other with enough time and resources.

None of these actions are difficult and they can make a big impact on employee engagement – everyone benefits from the ‘high performance’ which flows from being involved in meaningful work.

Politics, we’re told, is the art of compromise. If compromise is an art it must be good! Management and Unions in dispute situations quite often state “We’re sure a reasonable compromise can be reached”. If compromise is reasonable it must be good! But is it?

In a way we have been brainwashed into thinking that compromise is the right solution in conflict situations. Compromise is effective in managing conflict in the short term. But it doesn’t resolve conflict or provide a lasting solution. This is because compromise is a lose/lose solution (both sides surrender something to move the situation on) – or at its very best it is a very weak win/win solution (both sides gain a little). It is a low level accommodation – an armistice.

Compromise in a way produces a distorted outcome, one that neither side wanted ideally. So is there a better way? Yes – and it’s called “The 3rd Alternative”, and this is the title of Stephen R. Covey’s latest book. (And most likely his last he says – he’s now 80!)

The book is very readable (like Covey’s other best-sellers) and is essentially about the mind-set and skills required to resolve conflict in a way that produces a higher and better solution than either protagonist envisioned in the first place. This entails a collaborative search for a solution where nobody gives up anything and where everybody wins – a win/win solution in the richest sense of the phrase.

In its pages are many examples of creative solutions from the organisational world, community issues and personal and family life showing how the most difficult problems can be solved in a way that brings peace, greater mutual understanding and even healing. It is well worth a read – if you really want to avoid the cop out of compromise.

If you would like to discuss how to resolve costly organisational conflicts give us a call on 01-2788 727 or e-mail: info@kinchlyons.ie.

Where has my attention gone? How many of you have just checked Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn or an email account? Many social networking activities are anything but social.

Technology is only useful if you are the master of it and not a slave to the ping of an incoming email with a conditioned reflex like one of Pavlov’s dogs. How successful would an elite athlete be if they responded to everything and not what is the most important? Essentially if you control you attention you control your life.

Amarach research has found that about three in 10 mobile phones users in Ireland now have smart phones, and expects that these devices may overtake regular phones by next year. People with smart phones often highlight that the enhanced technology contained within them allows them to be able to multitask a lot more. The inference is that it is desirable to be able to multitask. It is however not as productive as you might think. As Switching Time is the time it takes the brain to switch from one activity to another which research shows results in taking us an extra 25% longer to complete any given task.

David Meyer head of the Brain Cognition, and Action Laboratory at the University of Michigan questions the value of trying to get better at multitasking. ‘Training can help overcome some of the inefficiencies by giving you more optimal strategies for multitasking,’ he says. ‘Except in rare circumstances, you can train until you’re blue in the face and you’ll never be as good as if you just focused on one thing at a time. Period. That’s the bottom line.”

So it appears we could all learn a thing or two from Fireman Sam (whom I watch regularly with my two and half you old daughter) who states ‘do one thing at a time’.
